Stand Your Ground – I Won’t Back Down

By Pastor Terry Cuthbertson | Hope City Church

There are moments in life when you just know—this word isn’t just for me, it’s for the whole body. That’s what happened Sunday morning. I walked into church with a message ready to go, notes in hand. But during prayer, the Holy Spirit whispered a different direction. And like many of you know… when He speaks, we listen.

?️ When the Battle Finds You

I opened to Psalm 83, and it hit me like a flood:

“Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God!”
– Psalm 83:1

The Psalmist was surrounded by enemies. Every name listed, every alliance formed, was a reminder that sometimes it feels like everything is coming against us. But David doesn’t end there. He recalls God’s past victories, naming the enemies God already defeated. It’s a bold, gritty prayer of faith:
“Do it again, Lord.”

And that’s where we find ourselves too, isn’t it? In seasons where we must remember what God has already done, and declare that He is not done yet.

? No Escape Plans

Let me say this clearly:
God didn’t bring you this far to leave you now.

We are living in a time where giving up is easier than ever. But just like Elisha, when Elijah tried to leave him behind, we must declare:

“As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.”
– 2 Kings 2:2

Elisha had already burned the plow. There was no going back. And neither should we.

Too many people turn back when the pressure comes. But if you go back to Egypt, you go back to bondage. What you left behind may seem easier, but it’s not freedom. You’ve come too far to return to the place you prayed to be delivered from.

⚔️ Put On Your Armor

Ephesians 6 reminds us that we are in a real war—not against people, but against principalities and powers. And God didn’t leave us empty-handed. He gave us armor:

  • Belt of Truth
  • Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Shoes of Peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit

But here’s the key: this armor has no protection for your back. That means… don’t run. Stand.

“Having done all to stand—stand therefore…”
– Ephesians 6:13-14

? Don’t Leave the Field Too Soon

When things get hard, the temptation is to start over somewhere else. But God is saying:
Stay in the field. Your harvest is closer than you think.

Galatians 6:9 puts it like this:

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap if we do not lose heart.”

There’s a due season for your obedience. And quitting early only guarantees someone else will reap what you’ve sown.

? Learn to Discern: Warfare or Discipline?

Not every hardship is the devil.
Some of it is God preparing you for what you’ve asked for.

He disciplines those He loves—not to punish—but to shape us into people who can handle the weight of His promises. If you’re going through fire, it doesn’t mean you’re disqualified. It might mean you’re almost ready.

?️ Make This Declaration

Before I closed the message, I asked our church to stand and declare with boldness:

“Father, I trust You. I won’t quit. I won’t back down. I won’t leave until I see the harvest. I burn the plow. I’m not going back—I’m going forward with You.”

You can make that declaration today too. Right now. Let it settle in your spirit. Let it burn away fear, discouragement, and distraction.

?️ Final Thoughts

Friend, don’t let the storm convince you God has left. He’s preparing you.
The battle is a sign you’re over the target.
The fire is refining you.
And your due season is closer than you think.

Stand your ground. He will not fail you.
